Family Resource Guide

A cancer diagnosis affects the entire family, and it can be difficult to know how to support children when a parent, spouse, or loved one is diagnosed. Our Family Resource Guide will help you navigate conversations with your child about a parent’s or caregiver’s cancer diagnosis using age-appropriate language.

We’ve organized the guide by age groups—0-3 years, 4-6 years, 7-11 years, and 12 years and up—so whether you have a baby or a teenager, you’ll know what to expect. You’ll learn how to approach the topic of cancer in a way that’s appropriate for your child’s age and gain insight into how children at different stages of development process this information.

The Family Resource Guide also offers tips on how kids typically react to stress at different ages, along with fun play activities you can do together to help them cope and build resilience. Plus, we’ve included a Common Terms section to define key words that can help your child understand the situation more clearly.
